Homestead, Irwine Minster, Dorset

This is a charming study of a Tudor-style property as it was in c.1930. The artist has placed birds and a cat into the picture to introduce an organic element into what would otherwise be an architectural study.

There are two ageing spots on the print surface and some discolouration of the mount.

Arthur Bell (1897–1995) was a painter and etcher, originally from Kettering, who came to Poole in 1919 to convalesce after service on the Somme. Before the war he was studying to be an architect, but once in Dorset he was taught etching by Leslie C Ward. He later taught Art at Canford School. The artist lived in Constitution Hill Road, Parkstone, Poole.
He moved to Cheltenham in 1938 where he taught art at Cheltenham College The artist printed on laid JCA Ingres watermarked paper from France.

The house in the print was originally called ‘Homestead’ of Iwerne Minster. It still exists as The Oak House, Old School Lane, Blandford Forum (see image below).
