This engraving is from the eighth edition (1824) of Thomas Bewick's first major independent publication, A General History of Quadrupeds, that was first printed and published in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1790.
This print is taken from the original end-grain boxwood block engraved by Thomas Bewick. It has been owned by James Bostock for many years as a powerful example of the use of this medium, and no doubt also a source of inspiration.
